“So how was school today?”
“It was OK.”
“Just OK? What did you learn about?”
“Oh, you know – stuff. Can I have a chocolate when we get home?”
“Maybe after you’ve had something healthy to eat. So what new words did you learn today?”
“Hmmmm I can’t remember.”
“Did your teacher read you a book?”
“No.”
“So what happened? You can’t have spent 6 hours away from me and have nothing to tell me.”
“Oh, I don’t know, Mummy. I played outside with T**** and H**** and I ate most of my lunch.”
Everyday it’s the same. He leaves me and on his return the last thing he wants to do is talk about his day. I on the other hand am itching to know what occupies his time, what he talked about, who he spoke to, what activities the class did.
Did he get into trouble today?
Did he finish his cutting and pasting?
Was anybody mean to him in the playground?

Did he miss me?

I love it! I have wondered the same thing…it is truly a mystery!
As a teacher, I really feel for you in this Mystery post — I have SO many parents wondering the same thing !! If only there were a way for this Mystery to be solved.. better for both parties, I feel.
All the parents in the world are probably wondering the same…kids are a mystery in themselves
very cute post… SO true. i ask my 2 girls (5 & 6) the same things..and get similar responses to your son. and sometimes it springs upon them to say something about their day..after we’ve said our duaa, shahada, and turned off the lights for bed..!! kids will be kids, subhanAllah
Oh, the eternal conversation we have with our children. I think they learn very young that this is one of the behaviors that will drive us crazy but if we didn’t ask they would feel overlooked and uncared for.
Clever post – we’ve all been there! The good news is that eventually they start talking and sharing their news.
The mystery, you’ve expressed it really well. My daughter, 5, is the same. “School was ok” and that’s it, but come bedtime and she’ll remember so many things about her day! Just like Suhaa’s kids.
I remember asking my kids the same thing, and wondering the same thing as you
Now they are 34 and 29 and I still wonder. It never ends Alhamdulillah!
salaam sis. When I read this post, I was kinda feeling sad cos I will be asking myself the same questions when my little one starts schooling. I agree with Irving that it is never ending…we will continue wondering till our last breath.
Ah … this could be a conversation between me and my son word for word. Sometimes I wish I could be a fly on the wall and see what he was doing – other times I think it is probably better I don’t know…
