So designated dishwasher (aka Husband) is on strike. He’s had enough of washing dishes and scrubbing pots and that horrible dish drainer full of dishes. As designated NOT dishwasher I cannot say I am too impressed about this. He thinks it’s time to buy a proper dishwasher and while I’m nearly completely sold on the idea, I wonder – do they really make that much difference to domestic duties? And does it not chew up electricity and hot water?
So, my readers with dishwashers – is it really worth it?
And my readers without dishwashers – do you wish you had one?
Discuss.

no, omg! those are the most useless things ever. you have to scrub the dishes a fair bit anyways, and if you’re going to do that then you might as well wash the freaking dishes. but that’s my opinion.
we had a dishwasher at my mom’s place and whoever had to laod the dishwasher, mostly my mom, ended up just doing the dishes by hand because you were doing it half-way anyhoo.
so that’s my 2 cents.
HAHA, your husband is my hero! We don’t have a dishwasher, but man we both wish we did. Shaz hates to wash cutlery, and I don’t wash that often (although she wishes I did
)
The trick is to run it at off hours, middle of the night (if its quiet). Also, you have know how to pack it, or else its useless, it cooks food on better than any stove can. I assume you won’t be going LG…lol.
I utter a prayer of gratefulness every time I load the dishwasher and press start. Neither hubby nor I like washing dishes (*especially* in cold weather, even if you’re using hot water to wash the dishes)
We have never rented a house without one. Yes, it uses electricity (about 1 or 2 units I think), it heats up its own water but you have some control over that (‘eco’ cycles and the like).
The only things I have to wash by hand are pots with very bad, crusted-on stains. Everything else goes into the dishwasher.
IMO, it would definitely be a useful addition to a house with 3 kids.
oh ya.best thing after epidural:)hmm the new one,or atleast the one i have,doesnt make that much noise and if the dishes arent too dirty,the normal cycle finishes in 30 mins.and loading time for me takes around 10 mins max.its so nice to just push the button and relax.i will totally approve it.
Absolutely. Godsent. The most useful thing for people in countries without cheap imported labour (ie domestic help/maids). I can use it everyday it until it KOs. Having said that I am actually washing dishes manually quite a bit now as it KOed once but it is now working again somehow.
Salaams. Dishwashers are good, and no I am not just trying to make a sale here! If you add up the litres of water used in washing / rinsing / washing / rinsing etc.. by hand, I reckon you will find that it uses more. So based on that alone, dishwashers are a good thing. Wipe the solids off the plate with a damp sponge before loading. You can tell I used to be (still am?) an appliance salesperson.
um, you have 3 kids, so yes.. you need a dishwasher. Keep a bucket of warm soapy water in the sink to just throw the dishes in after each meal, a few might need a quick wipe, then load in the dishwasher. I run mine after dinner, then unload in the morning so it will be ready to fill after breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Salaam;
Dishwashers, for me, fall under “must have”. I even use a particular brand of detergent which is excellent at getting rid of stuck-on foods (you probably have it in OZ; it’s called “Cascade Complete” here)…which is great, because I am terrible at pre-washing dishes.
The newer dishwashers are designed to be particularly water- and energy-efficient, unlike the water behemoths of the past, which in addition to eating up water weren’t particularly good at cleaning dishes.
let me just say: if i had a dishwasher, i would kiss it ‘goodnight’ every night…then give it my place in the bed. i would gladly sleep on the floor if it meant we could get a dishwasher. cannot believe this rental place doesn’t have one. it’s 2008! it’s like washing all our clothes by hand. *RAGE!!*
spend a bit more and get one with a good energy and water rating- worth it in the long run. and less guilt- we all need that.
