I haven’t watched the video, but I get the comparison just from seeing the guy sitting on the loo! Fancy telling women to go and feed their babies in the toilet. However, it’s quite possible to breastfeed without showing your front to everyone, and it’s not unreasonable to ask them to do that.
From what I’ve experienced, Australians are ok with breastfeeding in public but obviously for the ABA to make this advert, they aren’t all ok with it. It seems more a problem in the US (not sure about the UK.) My pet hate is this idea that a woman breastfeeding “whips out her boob” or gets completely naked from the waist up to feed. This is never the case! Most of the time, people around won’t even know that she’s nursing her baby. For some it’s the very idea that the breast is there, doing what it’s supposed to that makes them very uncomfortable. Sometimes a bit of skin will end up being exposed but in the grand scheme of things, it’s not grounds to stop public breastfeeding.
Actually, I remember going to a convention centre for a wedding and finding my little one needing a feed. Could not find a mothers’ or parents’ room ANYWHERE. I was not going to go to the toilet to feed so found a quiet corner in a deserted hallway and sat on the carpeted floor.
As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,
