Do marines eat nutella? Because that’s pretty much my complete diet right there.

We watched the new episode of the Chaser’s War on Everything and I’m not going so far as to declare war on anything but I just won’t be watching again. Why did husband and I ever think they were funny? Were they funny in previous seasons? I vaguely remember the election show – what was that one? – had some good bits.
You can watch the whole episode here.
Please heed the warning at the beginning because there is for starters lots of swears and some other fairly offensive stuff after that.
I’m not going to go through the whole show skit by skit but for I will say the delivery of the naked goods was very very disturbing. Not even uncomfortable because it’s true sort of disturbing but just completely effed up, this needs a huge trigger warning sort of disturbing. And I would have LOVED it if Julian had managed to bring the real, human womanly Governor General instead of that mannequin and then witnessed the reactions of the boys-only crew.
So there we have it.
I still swoon over Craig though.

Oh HAI! Ready for the laziest comment ever? Okay, AWESOME! I discussed this on Facebook (as in, I posted an update about my thoughts on it, and then others responded.), and so here are my thoughts on the matter: a discussion on my FB page, fuhthuluvuhguh, copied and pasted here and masquerading as a comment. Because it’s all pretty much on the page, so why re-write it? It’s akin to reinventing the wheel. Actually, now that I think about this, it’s moved beyond the ‘lazy’ realm, and into the ‘w@nker’ realm, but i cannot quite crystallise why. No doubt you can enlighten me, Tassles. Anywho, here it is, slightly edited:
Susan Carland : How is what the Chaser did to the mannequin of Quentin Bryce any different to what Sam Newman did to the mannequin of Caroline Wilson?
Che Stockley:
Just trying to get my head around that too…
Susan Carland
To be honest, the Chaser sketch was FAR more violent (plus with all the old hilarious sexual violence gags we all just love!) than the Sam Newman one. But maybe it’s “okay” and “a bit of fun” because it’s those likable Chaser lads as opposed to the old buffoon, Sammy Newman.
Sam Encel
I found it pretty distasteful and it raises a couple of interesting question in relation to the Sam Newman stunt. Is this skit more acceptable because the pretence was different (raising the serious issue of barring women from the Melbourne Club)? And how would we react if the same thing were done to a male mannequin? With little outrage I assume, but would that be incomparable considering this skit’s theme of gender? These aren’t rhetorical questions by the way.
It’s a shame that the segment was probably a deliberate attempt to draw controversy in the pursuit of viewers. It was a pretty ordinary episode.
Susan Carland
Sam, i completely agree with your last paragraph. The whole show just seemed so desperate for controversy to grant publicity. That sketch with Jesus and the shark just had me rolling my eyes – it was just lame, really not funny at ALL, but it was like they had had a meeting and said “Okay, what are the Big Ticket Items guaranteed to get people infuriated so we can re-live our glory days when we got thrown in jail? 1. Jesus 2. Catholic church and anyone else involved in paedophilia 3. Palestine 4. Something like what Sam Newman did etc”. While I know the premise of the show is “war on everything”, the jokes aren’t even that funny anymore – just grasping at humour on the threads of shock-value.
Anyway, I think the skit was interesting and started off well in terms of the whole gender-head-woman-blocked angle, but the fact that it rapidly deteriorated into violence and groping instantly undid any merit it had in that regard. I like to think its sad irony, but maybe it was on purpose?
Susan Carland
You’re right, people wouldn’t be nearly as affronted if it were a male mannequin, but I think that comes back to history, context and power. Just as non-whites can say/do things about/to whites that are seen as funny, edgy, political, they would simply be unacceptable in the reverse. To use Sam Newman again, when he came out one episode with brown shoe polish on his face to emulate an indigenous player (and he still couldn’t see why that would be offensive), the reaction was very negative. But if he put on a red wig to make fun of a “ranga” player, it would be seen completely differently. Why? Aren’t they the same joke, essentially? Well, not at all, because the history of exploitation, oppression and violence to indigenous people by white people impact on the way that “joke” is made and interpreted. Similarly to the way men make “jokes” involving women that utilise violence, sexual imagery, etc.
Sam Encel
Well put, and I completely agree.
Notice how I finish with Sam’s point about how clever and insightful (paraphrasing) I am? I think that finishes it off nicely.
I must say that I really having an uneasy feeling of being a to$$er for pasting this here, but not enough to delete it all. You know, if you JUST GOT BACK ON FACEBOOK I wouldn’t have to hijack your post like this. So really, it’s all actually your fault.
kisses!
Well, THIS just takes the cake. You have officially reached levels of laziness never before attained by ANY human being. Shame on you! But since you ARE getting old and senile I do forgive you for that’s what friends do.
I never saw the Sam Newman thing so I can’t comment on that. I did find myself squirming at the end of the GG thing – I kept telling myself it’s just a doll, it isn’t the REAL person but somehow it didn’t make me feel any better. The Jesus one wasn’t funny at all. and I never watched the 4 corners show but I read much about it and I really hated that they kept on saying it was a “group sex” scandal. I don’t know if legally they could have called it a rape scandal but that’s really what it was. I mean if they really wanted to push boundaries maybe they should have pushed that one.
How does this promote violence against women??? And I doubt it was done for the controversy. If anything was done for the controversy, it would’ve been the Ethiopia (sp?) content
