We have been slowly doing up our house and it’s taken a few years but we finally saved enough to get the backyard done. We have alas not been blessed with many days of rain but when we were fortunate enough to be granted even a little, it would pool in the middle of the backyard at least ankle length which was just perfect for the boys to play around in but not so good for the foundations of the house. We were even subject to the cacophony of TOADS  and their mating call one particularly wet couple of days. DISGUSTING!

Our requirements were few – while I enjoy the pottering around I have been doing in the garden lately (and who the hell says tomatoes are easy to grow?? LIARS!) I do not have a green thumb. Things inexplicably die on me (fear not my trusted clients and owners, I am only speaking of the chlorophyll kind and not our furry, feathered or scaly friends.) So we needed a neat, tidy and very low maintenance garden with excellent drainage.  And alhamdulillah that is what we got! I have allocated a small space at the side of the cubby house for my gardening disasters adventures. It’s out of the way from guests’ eyes and surely if it’s out of their sight then I too can easily be forgiven for forgetting it ever existed in the first place. You won’t even see it in the pictures! Easy.

So here we go:

Here we have the East side of the house. As mother of three, it is the part of the house I frequent the most seeing as it’s the one with the WASHING LINE. I hated walking outside to see the patchy and yet overgrown area of lawn. I don’t know if the picture captures it propely but the garden is on a slope, so much that we would bump our heads on the washing line if we were standing there.

Horrible. Horrible.

Horrible. Horrible.

And here it is now:

Ta da!

Ta da!

I don’t know quite how to clean the old concrete but that will come later I suppose. I am amazed at how it has made the side look so ROOMY. The boys can ride their bikes here now and while I still hate doing the washing, it’s made a little more pleasant of late.

This part of the house didn’t get much use. The concrete is too narrow and again, that raised lump of lawn was difficult to mow and just unsightly.

The pics of the deck are coming..will post in a separate post. It isn’t a real deck but it looks great – trust me!
